      Originally scientists thought that the universe was made entirely of normal matter (protons, neutrons and electrons). However, they’ve now discovered that dark energy and dark matter now actually make up more of the universe than this normal matter. These are not completely understood yet, but we do know that dark energy behaves with an opposite effect to gravity and so probably contributes to why the universe is constantly expanding.
